Jointly sponsored by the House Leader, Hon.
Chidi Lloyd and the House committee chairman on
education, Hon. Maureen Tamuno, the bill, if
passed into law will amend the Rivers State
University of Education Law recently passed by
the State legislators.
The academic institution which was upgraded not
long ago from the status of a college of
education into a full-fledged university will
have its name changed to Ignatius Ajuru
University of Education.
Cited as Rivers State University of Education
Law (Amendment) Bill 2010, the sponsors seek to
amend sections 5(f), 7, 27 and 25 of the
existing law.
Presenting the bill to the House, Hon. Lloyd
noted that whereas the previous law prescribed
three sittings in a year for the governing
council of the institution, the new law would
recommend four sittings in a year for the
council.
The new law also seeks the creation of an
“Appointment and Promotion Committee”, with a
renewable two-year tenure prescribed for the
deputy vice-chancellor as against the present
four years.
The school would run degree awarding faculties
in humanities, natural and Applied sciences,
social sciences, education, vocational and
technical education, agricultural sciences,
business studies and continuing education
(formerly part-time studies).
The immortalization of the late elder statesman
and accomplished business executive is in
fulfillment of the promises of Governor Rotimi
Amaechi who had given his words to that effect
at the funeral of the deceased.
It would be recalled that Chief Ajuru was
recently felled by the assassin’s bullet at
Obehie, a border town between Rivers and Abia
States, having been trailed to the place in what
many have described as a politically motivated
murder.
