The
election had been postponed a fortnight ago
because of disagreement over the delegates’ list
for the election.
Though no casualty was recorded, the explosion
caused pandemonium as it brought business and
commercial activities to a halt for a long while
along the well populated Azikwo Road.
The National president of NULGE, comrade Kinsley
Ogba had warned union members when the election
was postponed that external interference in the
union activities would spell doom for the union
in the state.
The union has been divided into two groups
supporting comrade Kinsley Singbile and
Nathaniel Kaka, with union members accusing the
state government of backing one of the
candidates.
Police bomb experts were immediately drafted to
the scene to ascertain the circumstance
surrounding the explosion and unravel those
behind it.
Police sources who confirmed the incident said
the command was deeply worried about the ugly
incident and will ensure that those behind it
were brought to book.
The Action Congress (AC) had earlier expressed
its disappointment with the state government for
its role in the postponed election.
It accused the state government of desperation
to hijack the union as well as other unions in
the state to drum support for its policies.
Some of the workers who spoke on condition of
anonymity told The Verite that no amount of
intimidation would make them shift their grounds
on their preferred candidate for the election.
